AUDITION INFORMATION
Some ensembles at Lower Merion require an audition. Auditions for curricular ensembles (Chamber Strings, Chamber Choir, and Orchestra Winds) take place during January and February of the previous year. To audition, students must learn the assigned audition material and submit a recording by the posted deadline. Audition results are released in March.

Auditions for extra-curricular ensembles take place in the fall at the beginning of the school year.
Because audition results are released AFTER students register for classes, we ask that students follow these guidelines when registering for classes:
  1. All vocalists should register for Concert Choir (H).
  2. All string players should register for Symphony Orchestra (H).
  3. All woodwind/brass/percussion students should register for Concert Band (H)
    UNLESS
they were previously in Orchestra Winds/Wind Ensemble at LMHS. Those students should register for Symphony Orchestra (H).
Any necessary adjustments to registration due to audition results will be applied automatically.
The following ensembles require no audition:
Concert Choir
Concert Band (including Percussion Ensemble)
Symphonic Strings (part of Symphony Orchestra)
Football Pep Band

Chamber Choir
2017-2018

Admission to Chamber Choir is by audition only. Auditions take place each winter for the following school year. Anybody who will attend LMHS in the following school year may audition. To audition, you must email a recording of yourself performing the required audition material to the LMHS Music Department before the audition deadline. Audition material is typically posted in mid-January, with a due date at the end of February. Audition results are usually released in mid-March.
All auditions should be pre-recorded and emailed to Mr. Hunnex at hunnexj@lmsd.org. There will be no live auditions. Students can make as many recordings as they want, but should only submit their audition when they are absolutely certain that it's their best take.

The audition material is the same piece for all students, but is put in different keys depending on the voice part you choose to declare for your audition. There are four options:

Danza, danza, fanciulla gentile by Francesco Durante:

Students wishing to audition should use this process:
  • Select which voice part you'd like to declare for your audition. Use whatever audition material is most comfortable for your voice.
  • Download all of the files for the appropriate audition material. You should have a pdf of the sheet music and two mp3 recordings of the accompaniment: one at a slower tempo for learning, and one at a faster performance tempo.
  • Learn the piece to the best of your ability. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask Mr. Hunnex!
  • Submit a recording of yourself performing the excerpt to hunnexj@lmsd.org by the submission deadline. Make sure you include your name and voice part on your submission. This year's submission deadline is midnight on Wednesday, March 1, 2017.
  • Results will be posted sometime in mid-March.
  • Regardless of the results of your audition, you will be automatically placed in the correct section of Concert Choir. No action needs to be taken on your part.

The fine print. (details that didn't necessarily get covered above)

  • You will officially be considered only for the voice part that corresponds to your audition, but in the event that you could be considered for another voice part, Mr. Hunnex will contact you and give you an option.
  • If you get into District Choir, the audition requirement for Chamber Choir will be waived for the following year. You will have an automatic place in Chamber Choir.
